On 24th April, 2024 the Government of Pakistan promulgated the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (Establishment, Powers and Functions) Rules 2024.

Under the above-mentioned Rules, a separate body for investigation into cybercrimes, matters relating to the internet and data protection has been established by the Government of Pakistan.

The Agency has been established under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA) which is the over riding law in Pakistan pertaining to cybercrimes, social media, internet and data protection in Pakistan.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency or NCCIA shall replace the cyber wing of the Federal Investigation Agency which had previously been entrusted with investigation under the PECA.

The NCCIA shall cooperate with international agencies on matters regarding investigations pertaining to cybercrimes, cyber terrorism and data protection.
