Maiwald, one of Germany’s leading intellectual property law firms, has appointed patent attorneys Dr. Michaela Weigel-Krusemarck and Dr. Andreas Eisele as partners with effect from July 1, 2024.

Dr. Weigel-Krusemarck has been a patent attorney at Maiwald since 2023. She specializes in the fields of energy, mechanical engineering, optics, process engineering and medical technology & imaging. Michaela has many years of experience in patent examination and opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office and the German Patent and Trademark Office as well as in related appeal proceedings before the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office and the Federal Patent Court. She has successfully represented clients in numerous patent and utility model infringement proceedings, patent nullity proceedings and utility model cancellation proceedings, most recently before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). She regularly prepares expert opinions on freedom-to-use, infringement and validity.

Dr. Weigel-Krusemarck studied physics at the University of Bayreuth and the University of Exeter, following up her studies with a doctorate on special computed tomography for the female breast at the Institute of Medical Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. She was admitted as a German Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2015; she is also admitted to practice before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).

“Michaela is held in the highest esteem by our clients, not least because of her extraordinary ability to get on top of the most technically complex issues as well as her extensive experience in procedural matters,” says Dr. Alexander Schmitz, partner at Maiwald.

Dr. Andreas Eisele joined Maiwald as a patent attorney in 2017. A major aspect of his work concerns patent opposition proceedings; this in addition to patent grant proceedings, preparation of opinions on freedom to use and management of IP portfolios. Andreas has wide knowledge in the fields of optics, medical technology and image processing.

After obtaining his degree in physics and mathematics at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, Andreas received his doctorate summa cum laude from the Institute of Physical Chemistry with a thesis on the development and image processing of an electron microscope. Andreas qualified as a German Patent Attorney in 2010 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2013. He is also admitted to practice before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Following his qualification as a patent attorney, he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in “European Intellectual Property Law” in 2014.

Andreas Eisele is actively involved in the training of patent attorneys and is a member of the German Patent Attorneys and European Patent Attorneys examination boards responsible for the respective qualifying examinations.

“I am delighted at Andreas’ future commitment to Maiwald in his new capacity as partner,” says Alexander Ortlieb, partner at Maiwald, adding “Andreas has in recent years independently developed client support strategies which have been positively received by clients, and we look forward to a further expansion of this work in the coming years.”
