Schoenherr supported the Austrian Mayr-Melnhof Holz group in the financing of its acquisition of Swedish sawmill group Bergkvist Siljan.
The Schoenherr team advised Mayr-Melnhof Holz on drafting and negotiating the documentation for this financing. With the acquisition of the Bergkvist Siljan group, Mayr-Melnhof Holz will grow its sawn wood production capacity by approximately 50 % and expects to generate sales of more than EUR 1bln for the first time in 2022. This marks the steady continuation of the long-established Austrian company’s expansion and growth strategy. “We are glad to support Mayr-Melnhof Holz on this successful acquisition financing, and proud to have finalised it at record speed,” said Schoenherr partner Martin Ebner. Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding AG is one of the leading timber-processing companies in Europe, a major producer of glued laminated timber, and a driving force in cross-laminated timber. The roots of the Mayr-Melnhof Holz group go back to 1850, drawing on more than 170 years of experience in processing this valuable raw material, sourced exclusively from sustainably managed forests. Some 2,000 employees are involved in the transformation of the raw material into modern timber products. Headquartered in Leoben, Austria, the company now operates six sawmills – Leoben (AT), Paskov (CZ), Efimovskij (RU) and three sawmills of Bergkvist Siljan in Mora, Blyberg and Insjön (all in Sweden) – as well as four wood processing companies in Gaishorn (AT), Reuthe (AT), Wismar and Olsberg (both in Germany). The Schoenherr team advising Mayr-Melnhof Holz was led by Martin Ebner (partner), supported by Miriam Simsa (partner) and Philipp Kalser (attorney at law).
