Agenda
8.30am – 9.30am Registration & Breakfast
9.30am – 9.35am Opening remarks
- Fred Mazo, conferences producer, The Legal 500
9.35am – 10.20am Strategies for Navigating EU Data Privacy, How AI is shaping the future of Law, and Whistleblowing Insights
This panel explores the legal implications arising from the interplay between artificial intelligence (AI), data protection, and whistleblowing. As our daily lives become increasingly data-driven, safeguarding personal information has spiralled into a pressing social, legal, and political concern for the EU. Ranging from the 5G roll out, to reaching a provisional agreement on the AI Act and the uptake of Internet of Things technologies, personal data is abundant and serves diverse purposes. While presenting incredible opportunities, this data abundance also poses risks to data subjects. Consequently, robust data protection regulations are a societal necessity, dictating stringent rules for organizations in handling, processing, and storing personal data, emphasizing transparency and user consent.
Vast datasets are the backbone for AI. As AI technologies mature and become more ubiquitous, pressing legal issues arise related to content liability and copyright, ethical standards, and data privacy. This intersection with data protection is evident in legal frameworks, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). AI technologies can also be instrumental in analysing large datasets to identify patterns and anomalies that may point to misconduct. From a legal perspective, the delicate balance between leveraging AI for whistleblowing and protecting data privacy, as well as the individuals who come forward with information, raises significant challenges.
This panel shall outline the ‘European Strategy for Data’ and the potential compliance challenges organisations may encounter. It will also dissect the relationship between AI and the law, spotlighting the EU’s AI Act and its implications for both companies and individuals. Additionally, the discussion will touch upon the “copyrightability” of AI-generated content. Lastly, the multifaceted link between AI, data protection, and whistleblowing will be analysed, emphasizing the imperative to balance AI’s benefits in whistleblowing with the need to protect individual privacy and uphold ethical standards.
