Event Report

The Legal 500 returned to China in 2024, hosting its second GC Summit in the country following a return to China late last year with the GC Summit Shanghai. This time in Beijing, the event brought together a dizzying array of in-house lawyers from a wide range of sectors. Over 100 were in attendance overall, and hailed from a wide gamut of companies: from US-headquartered multinationals including information technology services and consulting company, chemicals companies, to global real asset managers, Beijing-based real estate investment firms, and a Shenzhen-headquartered computer manufacturing company. The conference covered a wide array of topics, and featured a mix of panel discussion and presentation format.

In first session, Jiming Zhao, a partner at W&H Law Firm, provided a detailed breakdown of the actions that need to be taken when confronted with shareholder litigation matters, especially considering the new company law that has recently come into effect.

The session was followed by an interesting panel discussion, led by Ning Chen, China region sales manager at SS&C Intralinks, on adapting to a new M&A landscape. On the in-house side, Ivy Wu, GC at DXC Technology, Tianfu Liu, GC at Cabot Corporation, and Chenyang Xie, chief legal officer at Foxconn Industrial Internet discussed risk points and important factors that companies must consider when preparing for a mergers, acquisitions, or joint ventures.

Qiang Cui, partner at Commerce & Finance Law Offices then led the discussion on how to select dispute resolution lawyers for a case, sharing valuable insight on the recommended process of selecting dispute resolution lawyers, as well as the participation of the in-house counsel in a case.

After the networking coffee break, we returned to the second half of the Summit. Yunchen He, at Grandway Law Offices led the discussion on the analysis of the new Company Law from ESG angle.

The next session was led by Yang Han, a partner at Han Kun Law Offices, who provided detailed insight on how to improve the accuracy of corporate criminal compliance risk identification.

In our final session, Xiao Chen, at DeHeng Law Offices shared his extensive experience on product liability dispute and defense, particularly for Chinese overseas manufacturing enterprise.

We are delighted that The Legal 500 GC Summit was again a huge success and look forward to many future events across China. Stay tuned for further updates.
