The Legal 500 look forward to welcoming you to our Summit in Miami. This Summit will cover a broad range of topics including compliance, M&A and disputes strategies with a focus on doing business within Latin America. Our speakers will be looking at the challenges of navigating across jurisdictions, as well as the opportunities presented by acquiring knowledge from several different avenues. The role of GCs is moving from not just legal, but forward-thinking business strategy. This session will be looking at various factors to be considered within the world of compliance, such as the FCPA, and applying compliance strategies to different jurisdictions. It will also look at anti-corruption in light of the pandemic.

This session will be giving an overview of the M&A space from different perspectives and analysing collective trends within the Latin American market. Discussion will also be had as to the impact of Covid-19 and how companies are adapting.

This session will be discussing how companies create and implement their litigation policies across the board. It will focus on how GCs interact with the C-suite to avoid, and where necessary, manage litigation risks. Alexandre Gleria heads up ASBZ Advogados’ tax planning, litigation and customs team who help clients to structure major corporate transactions, restructurings and infrastructure projects. Its clients operate across a range of sectors, including technology and social media. Â
Gerardo Hernández, partner, Consortium Legal
Gerardo is a partner at Consortium Legal – Nicaragua, with over 27 years of experience in the food and beverage, banking and financial services, real estate, energy, and retail sectors. He has extensive experience in conflict resolution, particularly in litigation and arbitration. He has litigated in the civil and commercial areas and is a certified commercial arbitrator at the Antonio Leiva Pérez Mediation and Arbitration Center of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Commerce and Services. Â

Jessica Arias Fierman, general counsel and legal director, Bupa
Jessica Arias Fierman is the general counsel and legal director of Bupa Latin America. She started with Bupa in 2010 and has held various leadership roles within the legal team across international businesses in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. She relocated to London in 2016 for her prior role as Bupa global legal director, which expanded to include responsibilities across international markets. Most recently, she returned to head up the legal function for Bupa Latin America. Prior to joining Bupa, Jessica worked for an investment firm focused on Latin America where she was the legal advisor to senior management on domestic and international business transactions. Jessica graduated from University of Miami School of Law with honors as a Juris Doctor. Prior to law school, she graduated cum laude, from University of Florida with a bachelor of arts in business administration.Â

Andrés Cedrón, vice president, corporate secretary, Stryker Corporation
Andres Cedron is vice president and corporate secretary at Stryker, a leading player in the medical technology industry. He has responsibility over Stryker’s corporate governance matters, and leads the legal team that advises on securities and M&A matters. Prior to his current role, Andres held several positions in his 12 years at Stryker. Most recently, he was chief legal counsel for Stryker’s medical surgical and neurotechnology group. Before that, he was VP, chief legal counsel for Latin America and EEMEA, senior legal counsel for Europe, senior director of compliance for Latin America and Canada, and legal counsel for Spain and Portugal. Prior to Stryker, Andres practiced as a corporate, financing and M&A attorney at Hunton & Williams LLP and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. Andres holds a JD from Columbia Law School, where he was a Kent Scholar, and a BA with distinction in political science from Colorado College.Â
Juan Manuel Marchán-Maldonado, partner, Pérez Bustamante Ponce
Juan Manuel focuses on mergers and acquisitions, infrastructure, financing and local and international arbitration.
In M&A, Juan Manuel handles multijurisdictional corporate operations and transactions and offers expert advice to buyers, sellers, investment bankers and lenders on SPAs, asset sales, due diligence processes and closing transactions. He has represented banks and issuers in international bond issues. He counsels international companies on major infrastructure projects, public-private partnerships, strategic alliances and project financing.
