The Legal 500 is delighted to formally announce the GC Summit: Ireland. Tuesday, 7th February 2023 will see the best and brightest in-house lawyers in Ireland meet at The Marker Hotel in Dublin to share experiences, learn from each other and network in a relaxed and professional environment.  

Our first conference in the country since 2019, the GC Summit Ireland will cover a wide breadth of the issues and challenges facing in-house counsel today. Among other topics, we will tackle communicating and managing regulators, investigations, employment issues and the Senior Executive Accountability Regime. 

As always, the event will conclude with drinks, food and an opportunity to meet and interact with peers from the Irish in-house legal world.

Speakers

Emily Ennis, Vice president and assistant general counsel, Aramark

Emily Ennis joined Aramark in 2019, and leads the legal team  for Aramark’s food, facilities management, property and Avoca  businesses  in Ireland and the UK food and global offshore business. She is a member of the Aramark Northern Europe Management team, advising and enabling the business to achieve its objectives, whilst mitigating risk.

Prior to joining Aramark, Emily was Head of Legal for Aer Rianta International (ARI), a global travel  retailer with operations in Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and the Americas. Emily also spent seven years as a corporate and commercial solicitor with Arthur Cox advising international companies. 

Emily is a graduate of UCD and the Honorable Society of Kings Inns and has been recognised by The Legal 500 in The GC Powerlist Ireland as an influential and innovative corporate counsel passionate about driving the business forward.   

Emily is  a mentor for The Law Society of Ireland’s Women in Leadership Mentoring Programme and a board director for the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland.    

Keith Waine, partner, Dillon Eustace

Keith Waine is a partner in Dillon Eustace and Head of its Financial Regulation team. He provides regulatory advice to domestic and international clients, including banks, broker-dealers, asset managers, payments & e-money firms, insurers and non-bank lenders.

Prior to joining Dillon Eustace, Keith spent 10 years working in senior executive roles at leading international banks and as Co-Founder and Chief Legal & Compliance Officer of an alternative mortgage lender. He began his career at Linklaters in London, where he qualified as a solicitor in 2002.

Waine holds the LCOI designation of the Association of Compliance Officers in Ireland and is a frequent author and speaker on financial regulatory topics.

Advising on a range of regulatory issues, including licensing, governance, anti-money laundering and prudential requirements, he aims to provide clear, practical solutions to help clients protect, manage and grow their businesses within complex and fast changing regulatory environments.

John O’Riordan, partner, litigation and dispute resolution, Dillon Eustace

John is a specialist in commercial litigation, regulatory investigations, fraud and asset recovery and maritime and transport law. His clients include national and international corporations, banks and financial institutions, insurers, individuals, hauliers, freight forwarders and shipping companies. He is highly experienced in all types of High Court proceedings and regularly represents clients before the Irish Commercial Court. John acts in a variety of contractual and tortious disputes and represents clients in arbitration and mediation.

John’s specialist expertise includes: financial services and banking litigation; shareholder disputes; fraud, mis-selling claims; advising clients through the Central Bank administrative sanctions procedure; appearing before the Irish Financial Services Appeals Tribunal; enforcing foreign arbitral awards; and property and vessel damage claims.

John is a member of the International Bar Association and the Commercial Litigation Association of Ireland. He is a regular contributor to local and international publications and has spoken at international conferences in the area of commercial litigation.

Brian Clarke, partner, dispute resolution and insolvency, Maples Group

Brian is a partner in Maples and Calder’s Dispute Resolution and Insolvency Group in the Maples Group’s Dublin office. In addition to having extensive experience advising both domestic and multinational clients on large and complex commercial disputes, Brian leads our contentious regulatory and financial services offering. He advises corporates, regulated entities and their boards, and individual directors on all aspects of crisis management, governance issues, and regulatory and other investigations. 

Claire Morrissey, partner and head of data, commercial & technology, Maples Group

Claire is head of Maples and Calder’s Group’s Data, Commercial & Technology team in the Maples Group’s Dublin office. She is a leading adviser on data, technology and commercial contracts. Claire’s recent data experience includes advising on GDPR compliance, data transfers, data protection complaints and investigations and data breach management across all sectors including, in particular, financial services and technology. She has advised on a wide range of commercial contracts including IT contracts and major outsourcings in the financial services sector, intellectual property transfers and licensing, software development, distribution and R&D agreements. Claire joined the Maples Group in 2020. She was previously a partner at another Irish law firm and before that worked at a leading Magic Circle firm in London.

Karen Killalea, partner and head of employment, Maples Group

Karen is head of Maples and Calder’s Employment team in the Maples Group’s Dublin office. She has over 22 years’ experience advising clients on all aspects of employment law including specifically in relation to workplace investigations, protected disclosures, employee contractual matters (including in regulated entities), the protection of confidential information, post termination restrictions, incentive structures, employee privacy issues, TUPE, HR aspects of corporate re- structuring and investments in portfolio companies and asset disposals, industrial relations, working time, equality issues, other executive compensation matters, removal of directors and senior executives and all employment law issues contentious and advisory. Karen has extensive expertise advising a range of regulated and unregulated financial services businesses, insurance businesses, healthcare, technology and start-up businesses and their investors on the employment law, immigration and incentive aspects of their businesses in Ireland. An experienced litigator, Karen joined the Maples Group as a Partner and Head of the Employment team in 2019. Previously, she was a partner with a large Irish corporate law firm. Before that, Karen worked for Linklaters in their Rome office.

Sarah Irwin, head of legal, Tines

Sarah is Head of Legal at Tines, the Irish cybersecurity no-code automation start up helping companies deal with fast-evolving security challenges in a scalable way. Sarah is also Founder and Chair of Irish Tech General Counsel, an independent community which she set up to enable innovative in-house legal professionals working at tech companies in Ireland to connect and share knowledge within an inclusive, supportive environment, and to prevent members from becoming isolated in their working lives. Sarah has 13 years’ legal experience across two jurisdictions, having first trained as a barrister in London and later cross-qualifying as a corporate/technology solicitor in Ireland. Sarah ultimately pivoted from Maples Group to in-house practice and in 2022 was included in the Legal500 GC Powerlist: Ireland.

Helen Dooley, group general counsel, AIB

Helen joined AIB as Group General Counsel in 2012. She previously worked in private practice in the City of London, Hong Kong and Dublin, before taking up an in-house role as Head of Legal in EBS Building Society in 2005, which became part of the AIB Group in 2011. Over the last 16 years, in addition to her legal role, Helen has also held the Company Secretary position and managed the regulatory compliance and HR functions. Helen is currently responsible for the Legal, Corporate Governance and Customer Care functions.  The in-house legal team is the largest of its kind in Ireland, comprising approximately 100 lawyers advising on a wide range of matters including retail and wholesale banking, litigation and M&A activity. 

Jon Legorburu, head of litigation and dispute resolution, ByrneWallace

Jon is Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution at ByrneWallace LLP and a Visiting Professor in Law and Public Policy at Dalhousie University where he holds the Palmer Chair. His practice includes advice to government and the health system at the strategic level and to many of the State’s regulatory bodies. Jon’s work focuses on the early economic analysis of cases, rational behaviour in dispute situations, and strategies designed to achieve business gains where conflicts arise. His chosen areas of specialisation are company and corporate disputes, regulatory disputes, project based litigation in the construction and logistics sectors, and intellectual property/information technology matters. Jon’s work has included representing clients in business critical injunctions to protect or freeze assets. He has worked in leading law firms in England and Australasia, including Slaughter and May in the United Kingdom and Chapman Tripp in New Zealand.

Colm MacCarvill, Assistant general counsel, Director and company secretary, Squarespace

Colm is Assistant General Counsel, Company Director and Corporate Secretary at Squarespace. Responsible for leading product, privacy, international governance and payments teams. Colm is a graduate of UCD, the Honorable Society of the Kings’ Inns and has an MBA from Trinity College Dublin. Outside of his role at Squarespace, Colm is a member of the board of directors of Sports Dispute Solutions Ireland, the dispute resolution body for sport in Ireland. He is also recognised by The Legal 500 in the The GC Powerlist Ireland, highlighting top in-house legal counsel in Ireland.

Meabh Gallagher, Director of corporate governance & Legal counsel, Data Protection Officer, Aer Lingus

Méabh is Director of Corporate Governance & Legal Counsel at Aer Lingus where she has worked since 2012; she also acts as Aer Lingus Company Secretary and Data Protection Officer.

Méabh trained as a solicitor in London and has experience working in the UK, US and Ireland. She has completed the Diploma in Corporate Governance from the Michael Smurfit School of Business in UCD and the CIPP/E.

Prior to Aer Lingus she worked in the media and tech sectors. Her areas of interest include corporate governance, commercial legal advice, advising on technology and commercial contracts and data protection.

Racheal Batten, General manager - national R&D lead for legal and data protection research support services, HSE

Racheal has over thirteen years extensive experience as a legal professional both in the public and private sector, having qualified as both a barrister-at-law and as a solicitor. She has over seven years’ experience developing corporate governance within the public sector, most recently working as General Manager within the National R&D Lead for Legal and Data Protection Research Support Services within the HSE. Racheal is an expert in Data Protection, Privacy, Information Security as it relates to personal data and has been helping the HSE, RSCI medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies develop strategies, policies, and governance in this ever-evolving area.

Racheal also serves as a Dublin City Councilor and is a former Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, sitting on various boards in an advisory capacity, including Local Community Development Committee for Dublin City, Economics and chairing the Development Strategic Policy Committee for Dublin City, Citizen’s Assembly and is a former Legal Advisor with FLAC.
