The Legal 500 looks forward to welcoming delegates to the inaugural GC Summit: Spain in March 2023. For the first time, the Legal 500 will bring together the most outstanding in-house counsel in Spain to share insights and solutions to the challenges they are faced with in today’s volatile environment.

In partnership with Ambar Partners, CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo, Herbert Smith Freehills and Squire Patton Boggs, this event will include a series of panel sessions covering a variety of current and up-to-date content for debate.

Among other topics, we will understand and master legislation in digital services, litigation funding and alternative legal service providers in Spain.

During the last five years, numerous regulations have been approved and entered into force at the national and community level that seek to promote a digital single market while protecting the fundamental values ​​of the EU. However, while some see the prolific legislative exercise as a positive aspect, which aims to safeguard fundamental principles and rights and protect internal competition thanks to its vocation to extend beyond community borders, others describe it as overregulation that can affect ultimately to the competitiveness of the European economy. We asked several experts how they see the current bulky regulatory production in aspects such as AI, the use of data (personal and non-personal) or electronic commerce, but also in their relationship with their clients and consumers, in terms of responsibility and of market behaviour.

In this session, the strategic role of litigation funding will be addressed, either to finance the costs of litigation or arbitration or for its upfront purchase, analysing three key aspects: (i) the pros and cons of this figure, (ii) the financial and accounting considerations and (iii) the role of the legal adviser, all through a strategic, commercial approach and with reference to actual cases. Sara Maggi, deputy editor, The Legal 500 GC Powerlist Series

Sara Maggi joined The Legal 500’s editorial team, specialising on the in-house legal community, in 2022; since then, she has led the research for several editions of the GC Powerlist Series, aimed at highlighting the expertise of in-house counsel worldwide. 

In researching for the GC Powerlist Series, Sara has had the opportunity to interview a large number of globally acclaimed general counsel, chief legal officers, and heads of legal using English, Italian and Spanish. Sara’s passion and interest in corporate governance have allowed for conversations, reports and write-ups concerning hot topics in the area such as ESG, legal tech, diversity and inclusion and changes to the role of general counsel in years to come. 

Sara holds a BA from the University of Westminster and an LLM in International Corporate Governance from the University of Law in the United Kingdom. She was a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2022. 

Lucía Felgueroso, head of wholesale banking legal in Spain and Portugal, ING

Head of wholesale banking legal for ING Spain and Portugal. Lucía started her career as an associate at the Banking and Finance departments of two of the most important law firms in Madrid, providing legal advice in domestic and international cross-jurisdictional financing transactions, from real estate finance, project finance and leveraged finance deals to securitisations and regulatory matters. She joined ING in 2017, providing legal support to the wholesale banking business in Spain and Portugal. 

Carlos E. Landazabal Angeli, compliance and data privacy officer, EMEA, Canadian Solar

Carlos E. Landazabal Angeli has more than 20 years of experience in managing legal, compliance business affairs. He currently serves as compliance and data privacy officer EMEA of Canadian Solar. He previously served as general counsel to several multinationals such as Baker Hughes, Kimberly Clark, General Electric and Bureau Veritas, where he provided legal direction and support for operations in the company’s $1B Andean, Central America, and Caribbean region. He previously served as an Associate at James & Asociados — a law firm with a prestigious portfolio of petroleum clients. Carlos played a key role in the firm’s international growth by launching its compliance and corporate affairs operations and advising multinational clients in Latin America on these areas. He also is advisor to Sucede, a non-profit organisation. 

Ana García, general counsel and global corporate secretary, Kutxabank

General counsel and global corporate secretary at Kutxabank. Prior to joining the bank in 2019, Ana headed the regulatory law area of Baker & McKenzie’s banking and finance department in Madrid, where she worked for five years. Throughout her extensive professional career, she has worked in other prominent law firms such as Uría Menéndez and has held senior positions on the boards of directors of securities companies and investment banks. She has also developed a strong teaching activity, lecturing at IE Law School and CEU University in Madrid. 

Miguel Riaño, presidente, Herbert Smith Freehills Spain

Miguel has more than 20 years of experience advising large companies, investment banks, private and public capital entities in both national and cross-border operations, including acquisitions, public tenders, project financing, privatizations and regulatory matters, as well as in matters of litigation and arbitration. 

Diego Santacruz, director legal, LCS Abogados

Diego is the legal director of the firm and has extensive experience in litigation advice, having coordinated the defense of more than 40 investment arbitrations under the arbitration rules ICSID, UNCITRAL and the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, as well as performing the functions of representation and defense before the civil, criminal, contentious-administrative and social jurisdictional orders in Vizcaya, Zaragoza and Cantabria, and of legal adviser with the Passage Port Authority. 

Ángel Martín, senior advisor, Carbonia Investments

Ángel has been senior advisor for both listed and unlisted companies, with more than 25 years of experience advising banks, funds and debtors in financial and operational restructuring of Spanish and foreign companies in various sectors. Likewise, he has been appointed bankruptcy administrator in some of the most relevant restructuring and bankruptcy operations that have taken place in Spain. Until September 2021, he was responsible for Deal Advisory in EMEA, global co-responsible and responsible in Spain for the Restructuring practice at KPMG. 

José Julio Figueroa, director general de Área Asesoría Jurídica, Acciona

José Julio is the general director of Acciona’s legal department. He joined the firm in 2002 as part of the legal team and has more than 15 years of experience advising on highly complex regulatory, corporate and litigation matters in the renewable energy sector with an international and innovative approach. 

Lucia Sanchez-Ocaña Leyun, european chief risk and compliance director, EU DPO. Miembro de la junta directiva de ASCOM,

Compliance executive bilingual in English, Lucia has 20 years of professional experience. Graduated in Law and Master in Stock Markets from the IEB. She is an expert in the implementation of regulatory compliance and data protection programmes. 

Member of international work teams, Lucia is at the forefront of supporting the implementation of ESG values, especially through proposals and discussions on the agenda, and the implementation of specific governance, sustainability and environmental policies, hence her outstanding communication skills and extensive development of her career. 

Teresa Zueco, partner, Squire Patton Boggs

Managing partner of Squire Patton Boggs´ Madrid office, and head of the Corporate, M&A and Private Equity Practices. She specialises in the areas of general corporate law, national and cross-border mergers and acquisitions for industrial companies and private equity funds. She has a particular focus on private equity schemes, LBOs, MBOs, MBIs, secondary funds, special situations and distressed investments. Teresa has extensive experience advising on M&A and corporate structuring in the infrastructure and energy, transport, healthcare and hospitality sectors. She is a well-known dealmaker in the Spanish market, and one of the most active business lawyers in Spain by deal volume. 

Ana Mondedeu, associate general counsel, Insud Pharma

Associate general counsel Insud Pharma Group since 2016, Ana worked as M&A and corporate legal director in PROSEGUR for six years and initiated her career in the Public M&A and Finance department in CMS Albiñana & Suarez de Lezo.  

Ana is a member of the board of directors of multiple companies within Insud Pharma Group, as well as in other related companies in different sectors. 

José Luis Donoso Parrado, general counsel, Iridium

José Luis Donoso holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Autonomous University of Madrid. He also holds a Master’s degree in Infrastructure and Public Services Management from the ICCP College in Madrid (2004), as well as an LLM from Northwestern University in Chicago and Instituto de Empresa in Madrid (2009).
He has over 20 years of experience working in the infrastructure sector. In 2007, he joined IRIDIUM (ACS Group), where he continues to pursue his professional career as the director of legal advisory since 2014.

Javier Serrada, director legal, Acciona Infraestructuras

Javier obtained his degree in law at the Universidad Publica de Navarra and has an LLM by the Northwestern Law School of Chicago. After a short period in the public sector and in the private practice, Javier started his career in Acciona as in-house lawyer in Acciona Windpower back in 2005, becoming Head of Legal of said company in 2008. After the merger between Acciona Windpower and the german wind turbine manufacturer Nordex in 2015 Javier acted as Deputy General Counsel of this corporation until 2018 when he was appointed as Head of Legal of Acciona Infrastructures S.A., his current position.

Eduardo Ruis Montoya, vice president and deputy general counsel, International legal EMEA, APJ, Latam, Hewlett Packard Enterprise

Eduardo Ruiz serves as vice president and deputy general counsel for the Global Markets at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. His team provides a full range of legal services to the HPE subsidiaries and operations in all countries where HPE does business outside of North America, including EMEA, APJ and LatAm.
He joined HP Spain in 1996 and during his tenure at HP/HPE has held a number of management positions within the legal department, including the roles of legal director for Iberia (Spain and Portugal), legal director for Central and Eastern Europe (including Russia and CIS), vice president and associate general counsel for Latin America and Canada, and vice president and associate general counsel for Southern Europe (Italy, France, Spain and Portugal). Prior to his current role, Eduardo was the chief of staff to the chief legal and administrative officer from 2015 to 2019.
Eduardo earned a Master’s Degree in Law and a Master’s Degree in Economics, both from the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE) in Madrid, Spain, and is admitted to the bar in Madrid.
He was born and raised in Spain and has spent his career in Spain (where he currently resides), Brazil and the USA. He speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Fernando Ortega de Santa Maria, general counsel y secretario del consejo de administración, Siemens

General counsel Spain and Portugal and company secretary at Siemens Spain since 2011. He is part of the directive commission of Siemens Spain. Fernando graduated in Law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and was accepted at the Bar in Madrid. Fernando has an extensive career in the sectors of industrials and technology. From 1992 to 2007 he worked at Grupo Uritalia where he covered several roles overseeing Spain and Germany. In 2007 he joined the Italian company Italcementi where he was legal director of Spain and company secretary. In 2011 he became the general counsel and company secretary for Siemens Spain. Additionally, he is also in charge of antitrust (regional antitrust expert) for Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Turkey.

Jaime Bello, counsel industrial, IP and digital, CMS

Jaime Bello is counsel at the industrial, intellectual property and digital business department at CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo. He specialises in providing legal advice and contractual support to domestic and international companies in the entertainment, media and technology sectors, mainly in the areas of digital law, intellectual and industrial property, unfair competition, data protection and cybersecurity, personality rights, consumer and advertising law as well as e-commerce.
He has prepared numerous legal opinions covering the above topics and has extensive litigation experience before administrative authorities and civil, criminal and contentious-administrative courts.

Isabela Perez Nivela, vice president legal strategy and corporate functions, Coca-Cola European Partners

Isabela is the vice president legal, chief risk officer at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners; chairman of Andabank and independent director at Hola Luz. Additionally, she is also a member of the corporate governance department at ESADE.
In her current role at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners she is responsible for providing business legal advice, company business strategy and digital transformation. She leads a team of international in-house lawyers, operating across the main European markets.
Isabela graduated in law from the Universidad de Navarra, and was accepted into the Bar in 2000. She owns a Master in Tax law, and was selected to take part into the Programme Women to Watch sponsored by PwC — 30 women for 30 managerial positions.
Isabela like to shape young minds and share her expertise with them; therefore, she also acts as a professor of tax law at ESADE in the double degree of law and economics.

José Maria Miralles, global general counsel - legal, regulatory and competition affairs, Cellnex

José Maria Miralles is the global general counsel, responsible for legal, regulatory, and competition affairs, as well as compliance and intellectual property. He is an administrator and director of various companies within the Group, data protection officer, and chairman of the Ethics and Regulatory Compliance Committee. Prior to his current position at Cellnex, he joined the Abertis Group in 2003. He holds a degree in Law from the University of Barcelona (UB) and a Master’s in Law Practice and Business Consultancy from San Pablo CEU University. He also holds a Postgraduate degree in Company Law and Commercial Registry from ESADE, in Urban Law and Public Property Rights from UPF, and in Economic and Legal Analysis of Competition from UB.

Javier Martínez de Aguirre is Coordinator of the Consulting and Contracting Department of SegurCaixa Adeslas. He has more than 12 years of experience in the fields of intellectual and industrial property, data protection and the law of new technologies.

José María Balboa Toribio, general legal and compliance counsel para españa y latinoamérica, Inetum

José María Balboa Toribio is general legal and compliance counsel for Spain and Latin America at Inetum.
José María has more than 12 years of experience helping organidations create compliance cultures and consolidate legal and compliance functions. He currently leads the Legal Advice and Compliance team for Spain and America at Inetum, an agile IT company that provides digital services and solutions and a global group that helps companies and institutions make the most of the digital flow. Its main objective is the efficiency of the legal operations of the organisation and advice on new technologies and innovation, included in the entire process, from the generation of the idea to its commercialisation. Participate in the creation of value offers, both internally and for clients, in projects related to artificial intelligence, blockchain and digital identity, among others. He has previously held similar positions at Everis, Springer Nature and other companies related to new technologies. Likewise, he was included in the GC Powerlist as one of the Latam Specialists in 2022 in Spain.

Amalia del Val, head of legal, Savana

Amalia del Val is the Head of Legal of Savana. Prior to joining Savana in 2022, she developed her professional career in specialized law firms, such as Deloitte Legal in Madrid, as an expert Privacy and IP/IT lawyer. Amalia holds a Cum Laude LLM on IP and Technology Law from Fordham University, New York and has developed a strong teaching activity in institutions like IE Law School, Carlos III University and Magister Lvcentinvs of the University of Alacant.

Santiago González Pérez, director del departamento legal laboral, American Express

Santiago González Pérez is director of the labor legal department of American Express for EMEA. Before that, he spent 10 years at Accenture, first as head of the labor legal department for Spain, Portugal, Israel and Africa and later in a global role dedicated to providing legal support from a labor point of view to the M&A area and contracts with customers with labor implications (e.g. outsourcing, etc.). Before that he also spent 10 years in Sagardoy.
