Event Report
The Legal 500 was delighted to be in Hong Kong on 19 October to celebrate the launch of the GC Powerlist Teams 2023. Allan Cohen, Ben Lovell, and Alexander Owen were joined by the most influential in-house legal lawyers of the SAR for a magnificent reception at the Mandarin Oriental.
Joelle Lau, Partner in Charge at Jones Day, opened the memorable ceremony with heartfelt remarks and offered his congratulations to the awarded in-house legal teams.
The event proceeded with a recorded video speech by Joe Zhou, Chief Compliance Officer and Global Head of Legal and Compliance at China International Capital Corporation, who shared his insights on the Hong Kong legal market.
Following this, Jay Tambe, Partner and leader of Jones Day’s financial market practice, who had come from New York to attend the reception, took the guests on a walk down memory lane on the history of the firm and gave an inspirational talk on its successes.
Jay then handed over the reins to Eoin Gillen, APAC General Counsel at BNP Paribas. Eoin stressed the significance, for him and his team to being acknowledged in the GC Powerlist, and discussed the evolution of the role of corporate counsels over the past few years. He further addressed the challenges confronting in-house lawyers while also highlighting the opportunities presented by Hong Kong’s business sector.
Finally, Johnny Hui, Manager of Robert Walters’ Legal and Governance Division, took the stage. He emphasised the fact that GCs had emerged as pivotal leaders and essential strategic allies, and commented on the balance they now had to strike between the dual roles of providing technical legal advice and being involved in business or management decisions.
Many thanks to all the speakers for contributing to the success of the event and sharing their insights. A special thank you to Jones Day and Robert Walters for sponsoring the publication of the Powerlist and partnering with us to celebrate the most impressive in-house legal talents in Hong Kong.
