Event Report
The Legal 500 partnered with K&K Advocates, Walalangi & Partners (W&P), Hogan Lovells DNFP and TNB & Partners in association with Norton Rose Fulbright to host the inaugural GC Summit – Indonesia in Jakarta on 28 November 2019.
While it is true that in-house counsel around the world are bound together by common challenges and experiences, precise, relevant and bespoke advice requires particular awareness of a specific regional context when supporting their businesses. Each respective industry sector and jurisdiction presents a unique set of challenges – and it is those counsels who deal best with existing and emerging relevant threats that are truly among the in-house elite.
Evoking this principle as well as fulfilling The Legal 500’s goal of bringing in-house communities together around the world, we convened a summit involving some of the region’s top legal minds in Indonesia. Here, these challenges and opportunities were dissected and examined in front of an audience of approximately 150 people, in the form of four in-depth panel discussions and relaxed networking in Jakarta’s The Four Seasons.
The first of the event’s panel discussions was hosted by K&K Advocates, and the discussion – moderated by Danny Kobrata, K&K Advocates – centred around data privacy, protection and localisation, assessing the various challenges under Indonesia’s new data privacy framework. Insights were brought from the perspective of experienced in-house counsel including Fredric Brion, PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia, and covered a range of matters within the data privacy space including protecting personal data, the rise of digital trade and global flows, and the varied privacy laws of APEC Member Economies.
Panel session two then discussed cross-border M&A in emerging markets, and the need to deliver both value and quality when completing a transaction. Luky Walalangi, and Miriam Andreta, Walalangi & Partners (in association with Nishimura & Asahi) provided the private practice perspective, explaining common challenges and pitfalls when delving into a new market, whilst in-house insights were drawn from Ruangguru, Indosat Ooredoo and 3M.
The third of the event’s panel discussions was hosted by Hogan Lovells DNFP, and the discussion – moderated by Dyah Paramita, Hogan Lovells DNFP – centred around preventing, managing and responding to a crisis. Insights were brought from the perspective of experienced in-house counsel including Chandra Agus Salim, Sarulla Geothermal and Tiur Henry Monica, Blackspace.
Rounding off the day’s events was the fourth and final panel session which was presented by TNB & Partners in association with Norton Rose Fulbright, and the discussion – moderated by Benny Bernarto and Kresna Panggabean, TNB & Partners – discussed how GCs and external counsel can work together to manage big-ticket disputes and investigations. Jeremy Lua and Shamim Razavi, Norton Rose Fulbright, highlighted the potential challenges that can arise when facing an investigation that spans multiple jurisdictions; whilst Trisula Dewantara, Tokopedia and Aldi Pagaruyung, HP, shared their thoughts on how they would respond to real life examples.
The Legal 500 would like to thank all those who attended as well as our partners for this event: K&K Advocates, Walalangi & Partners (W&P), Hogan Lovells DNFP and TNB & Partners in association with Norton Rose Fulbright.
