Event Report
There is always something special about our events in Malaysia. It is a jurisdiction that is packed with legal talent but, beyond that, those working there are very willing to talk frankly, take creative views on matters, doing so in a relaxed and cheerful manner. This means that all topics are engaging, practical and enjoyable, which our events being oversubscribed. In the case of our 2024 Malaysia GC Summit, we invited 150 legal professionals fortunate enough to make it on to the approved guest list for an afternoon of incisive legal discussion on a range of topics.
Our keynote speaker Chen Sue Ann of IOI Properties expertly set the scene for proceedings, before our first panel discussion on AI (with Ong Johnson and Lo Khai Yi of HHQ, Navrita Kaur of Microlink and Jacelyn Khoo of Hong Leong Financial Group), which took a fresh look at a much-discussed area.
Tax legend S. Saravana Kumar of Rosli Dahlan Saravana Partnership then took to the stage in his own inimitable style to address the audience, packed with relevant anecdotes and practical takeaways for audience members to adopt the very same day.
We moved back to the tech sphere with our next panel session alongside Robin Lynn & Lee, in collaboration with DFDL. There was a packed panel on stage with a huge amount of experience present: Robin Teow and Hui Lynn Tan of Robin Lynn & Lee in collaboration with DFDL, Dalvin Kaur of Maybank Investment Banking Group, Qi Wen Tang of YTL-SEA Digital Bank Project and Vi Cher Chua of Funding Societies.
From here, the conversation moved to M&A, with expert guidance provided from Skrine partners To’ Puan Janet Looi, Siva Kumar Kanagasabai and Charmayne Ong and corporate counsel Yin Ee Ong from Warisan TC Holdings and Nor Marhamah Yahya of FGV Holdings.
Richard Wee of Richard Wee Chambers then addressed the room during a very well-reviewed presentation on current and future challenges for in-house counsel.
Our final panel session was an all in-house counsel one moderated by The Legal 500’s Joe Boswell. Titled The in-house perspective and changing role of in-house counsel, a number of highly practical topics were discussed, from bringing in the best talent to your legal team, to the proper response to budgets decreasing, to charting a course to a general counsel role.
The Legal 500’s 2024 Malaysia GC Summit Edition was an unqualified success, which led to positive feedback from those in attendance, and managed to attract a good proportion of the top corporate counsel in Malaysia.
We look forward to the 2025 edition, and to the resumption of the Malaysia GC Powerlist next year.
