Event Report
The Peruvian Summit has been a real success. The three panels were extremely engaging and left people leaving the room feeling enriched. During the first panel, Gianmarco Tagliarino, General counsel at Grupo Breca, reminded the audience how ‘culture’ is the starting point of good business. For instance, he said, ‘ESG is not a marketing issue, but it is a cultural issue. It should also include a top-down approach: starting from the directory and then going down to each area of the company. If you do not have an ESG culture really impregnated in your organisation, I would not advise doing it for pure marketing as there is nothing to gain from it’.
In the second panel, Veronica Arbulu, General counsel at Stratkraft, recognised the Summit as being ‘a space of reconnection, and learning, where we could share about current legal issues’. She leaves us with 3 great strengths:
- Legal management has transformed exponentially, now we play a more strategic role.
- Sustainability is not alien to the legal areas; we must keep this in mind in our day-to-day as well as internalise it in our culture.
- External lawyers are our strategic partners, we must incorporate them into our business culture
- it was an enriching and energetic afternoon. Let’s keep pushing for spaces like this.
Finally, the closing panel highlighted how yes, technology can help legal departments to make their jobs more efficient as well as engage in higher value-added work, but we should not rely just on it. As Oscar Trelles, Cuatrecasas’s partner stresses, ‘we should not take technology per se, but it is crucial to first identify objectives and achievements, as only based on these, technology can help. It is also important to remember that it is better to start small and have some wins before undertaking a very complex project. For instance, it is better to go for products that can be adopted rapidly rather than those which require long-term implementation as technology and needs change very quickly.’
