Event Report
Legal Business Magazine was delighted to host our second annual Ireland GC Forum with Addleshaw Goddard on Wednesday 11 October 2023 at the Medley in Dublin.
The evening, which drew in-house counsel from some of Ireland’s most high-profile companies and financial institutions, was opened with a welcome address from AG’s head of Ireland, Mark Walsh.
Attendees then heard from Kerry Westland, AG’s prominent head of innovation and legal tech, who cut through much of the noise around generative AI to deliver a fascinating talk about what AI actually is, as well as a valuable demonstration on its practical applications in the business of law.
Legal Business editor Nathalie Tidman then took to the stage to moderate a dynamic discussion featuring a sector-diverse panel including Helen Dooley of AIB, CÃara Garahy of Salesforce and AG’s David Hackett on the many opportunities and risks around generative AI.
The conversation was wide-ranging, with participants giving their insights on why users of AI should approach with a healthy amount of caution, given the levels of risk involved when it comes to client data. However, the ultimate message was one of optimism. Everyone agreed that AI is only going to get more sophisticated, so it is up to GCs and those in private practice alike to get their heads around how it can be used to the best advantage of the business.
AG’s Mark Walsh commented on the event: ‘We recently hosted an event with Legal Business in Dublin for GCs on Generative AI and its impact on in-house legal teams. It’s fair to say that our team, which is one of the leaders in this space, was in demand. We can offer practical insights on the latest generative AI tools being used in law, and having the ability to provide real-world insight and advice on the impact and future of AI, as with other tech matters, is essential. In fact the firm recently launched its own Gen AI tool called AGPT which has a Document Review feature to analyse and process documents at lightning speed, plus a Chat Q&A which ensures smooth and seamless information retrieval and conversations.’
It was great to see so many of Ireland’s legal community out in force (in spite of the less than clement weather) to engage in such an energising and topical subject! Many thanks to our sponsors at AG for helping to stage another fantastic event.
Keep an eye out for a full write up of the event, which will be featured in the November/December issue of LB.
