For several years, law firms have reported their PEP, salaries paid or revenue growth to communicate the strength or success of their businesses to potential clients and potential joiners. But with the changing world of work comes the realisation that those metrics were always poor proxies for a good business, and are unlikely to be important in deciding who to work with or for.
Beyond the obvious need to ensure a firm is capable and experienced, what do general counsel think really matters when deciding which external counsel to work with? What really sets law firms apart? What should law firms be measuring and communicating? Analysis of a range of RFPs would suggest that, for the modern in-house lawyer, D&I and ESG concerns take an increasingly important role in considering who to work with, as does choosing to partner with people who can contribute to a long-term relationship based on a shared vision and/or set of beliefs.
In this roundtable, we will ask some of the UK’s most prominent in-house lawyers what they think of the pace of change in the legal world, what makes them choose one law firm over another and what firms must do to build more sustainable relationships.
