Anthony Carrington leads our Insurance Litigation practice and specialises in advising clients on counter fraud strategies and bespoke fraud strategies on large-scale organised fraud for insurers.

He regularly advises clients in relation to similar fact evidence defences to fraud rings, fundamental dishonesty, sanctions including committal, as well as taking a lead in relation to strategy for investigations including automatic number plate recognition evidence.

Anthony has over 10 years of experience advising clients across a range of sectors and leads a team of lawyers who advise insurers in relation to their strategies to counter organised fraud.

His key clients include a number of the UK’s largest general and motor insurers.

Anthony’s notable work highlights include:

On Operation Tiny, an organised fraud ring of contrived accidents and application fraud. The operation consisted of over 50 claims for injury and other losses including credit hire. All of the claims matching the operation’s modus operandi were successfully defended. The reserves of the claims repudiated totalled over £1.5 million. The Operation was referred to City of London’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department and the key nominal was sentenced to 3 years and 8 months in prison. The operation formed the basis of a winning Insurance Time Award submission for Claims Partner of the Year. The Judges commented that “[they] were impressed with this company’s cross-industry collaboration with partners across the industry, and helping them to significant fraud savings through technology to identify fraud patterns.” As Supervising Partner in the case of Aviva Insurance Ltd v Ahmed. The claimant pursued a personal injury claim following a deliberately induced accident. The civil claim was successfully defended and found to have been fundamentally dishonest. Following the successful defence of the civil claim, Anthony provided advice in relation to an application for committal and the former claimant received an eight-month custodial sentence. Clients on market changes in counter fraud, using intelligence and Know Your Opponent to tackle specific issues targeting his clients. Anthony is also experienced in data analytics services used to identify clients’ organised fraud exposure via MOJ Portal data.

In addition, Anthony has liaised with the press on a number of cases on behalf of clients and has himself appeared on a number of series of the BBC’s Claimed and Shamed.
