Career

Alex is counsel in Freshfields’ international arbitration group, based in Washington, DC. Alex has extensive experience in advising on disputes concerning M&A, energy, telecommunications, insurance, banking and international trade. His recent experience includes acting as counsel in an ICC arbitration concerning one of the largest corporate disputes in Brazilian history, acting for sellers in a post-closing M&A dispute concerning a group of companies in five Latin American countries, representing the buyers in a major gas-pricing dispute and advising oil and gas companies, mining companies and other investors on investment treaty disputes with Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and various countries of the former Soviet Union. Alex has also been appointed by the ICC to act as sole arbitrator.

Alex was named as one of Who’s Who Legal’s leading arbitration lawyers in 2021.  He was a founding member and former president of the British Brazilian Portuguese Law Association and is currently a member of the Comitê Brasilero de Arbitragem. He frequently publishes articles and gives presentations on topics relating to international arbitration and Latin America.

Alex is licensed as a special legal consultant in the District of Columbia and is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales. Alex is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Italian, and has conducted arbitrations in English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.
