Career

Thomas is Special Counsel in Freshfields’ international arbitration group in New York. His practice is focused on complex commercial and investor-state arbitrations arising in a variety of business sectors, including technology, life sciences, telecommunications and the extractive industries.  He has served as counsel in numerous arbitrations under most of the major arbitration rules and in most of the major arbitral seats. Thomas also serves as arbitrator in commercial arbitrations.

Thomas is recognized as a “Future Leader” in international arbitration (Who’s Who Legal, 2021) and a “Rising Star, International” (New York Super Lawyers, 2014-2020).  He writes and speaks frequently on international legal matters. In 2015, he co-authored A Guide to the 2006 Amendments to the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, the pre-eminent treatise on the 2006 Amendments to the Model Law, which forms the basis for many jurisdictions’ arbitration laws.

Thomas is involved in several organizations, including as a member of CPR’s Council, the editorial board of Arbitration International, and the NY City Bar Association’s International Commercial Disputes Committee.

He is admitted to the New York bar and speaks English and Spanish.
