Career

Maris Butans has been practicing in the legal field since 2006. Past six years with PwC Legal Latvian office leading a team of dedicated professionals in competition and market regulation. He has an in-depth knowledge of and passion for European Union and competition law. In addition to antitrust and merger projects, his team has gained significant experience in impact to competition assessments of legislation and actions of SOEs.  At the same time, he brings fresh approach to regulatory compliance on various financial sector issues, particularly for the insurance companies.

Prior to joining PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal Maris gained extensive legal experience in legal proceedings, administrative law, compliance and various aspects of market economics. As a legal expert, he has participated in several international projects related to improving competition law capacity of national authorities and future development of competition enforcement. Apart from his experience working in law firms in Latvia, Maris has worked at the Competition Council of the Republic of Latvia, where he acquired extensive experience in application of investigative powers, operations of various business sectors and fundamentals of pricing strategies and behavioural economics.
