Position

Denis Philippe is one of the founding partners of Philippe & Partners. He has extensive experience in arbitration, banking and financial law, energy law, European law (including competition law), insurance, torts and liabilities. He benefits from more than 30 years of professional experience in civil and commercial law and, more specifically, in drafting, reviewing and negotiating national and international contracts, as well as in transactions that include financing aspects.

Career

From 1985 to 1998 Denis Philippe was partner at “Balon Buyle Maingain & Philippe” and from 1998 to 2000 he was partner at “Simonet, Kelder, Philippe, Domont, Lories & Mertens”. He is professor in banking and contract law at the University of Louvain and Paris and he is the author of various academic books, including a thesis on the change of circumstances in contract law and articles relating to privatisations. Denis Philippe has been appointed arbitrator by CEPANI and CCI and since 1960 he has been selected numerous times by the European Union to perform the function of expert for the implementation of European directives and for the approximation of legislations in Eastern European countries. Denis contributed to the creation of the IAG: an international network of lawyers and tax advisors. He is therefore a strong supporter of Philippe & Partners’ active role in various international networks such as IAG, IBLC, Interleges and OASIS.

Memberships

Denis Philippe is a member of the Brussels and Luxembourg Bar. He is a member of the European institute of Private law (with Prof. Von Bar, Germany) and the institute of trans-European experts (Prof. B. Fauvarque Cosson, Paris). He is currently chief editor of the legal review DAOR, member of various editorial committees (JLMB, RGDC …), and member of the academic commission of “BusinessLawTV”. Denis Philippe is also member and chairman of the boards of commercial companies and he is active in various associations (Belgian Nuclear Law Association …).

Education

Denis Philippe holds a PhD in law (UCL), a degree in economics (UCL) and a special degree in European Law (University of Utrecht).
