Career
As an Senior Associate with the firm’s Dispute Resolution & Risk Management practice, Piret Schasmin specialises in complex civil and public law disputes. Knowledge of different areas of law, effective project management, thoroughness and cooperation are key elements in promoting clients’ success.
Experience in fraud investigations and management liability. Piret has been responsible for leading large fraud and management liability cases amounting to a total value of over EUR 40 million. These matters have involved claims against former management and employees and have led to several criminal investigations.
Background in policy-making and EU product rules. Before joining Sorainen, Piret worked in the public sector, where she drafted policy and legislation in the following fields: product safety (consumer products), EU product rules (toys, pyrotechnic products, and explosives), market surveillance, standardisation and handling dangerous substances. Piret also worked at the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the European Union (in Brussels) as a counsellor for economic affairs and participated in the EU policy-making process as a representative of Estonia. Understanding the political, institutional and regulatory framework has been a key to making clients’ voice successfully heard in the policy-making process.
Advising the public sector. Piret Schasmin has advised public authorities in diverse areas of law, mainly drafting new legislative proposals and internal procedural rules and helping to interpret legislation. In addition, she has trained public authorities on market surveillance regulation.
Academic work on EU law. Piret has written an academic thesis and several articles on EU law. Topics include options arising under EU law for review of final judgments and administrative decisions as well as admissibility of electronic communication data retention.
Educated in State & Politics plus Public Administration. Before undertaking law studies, she was awarded a bachelor’s degree (BA) in State and Politics by the University of Tartu and a master´s degree (MA) in Public Administration by Tallinn University of Technology.
