Career
I lead the Competition and Regulatory practice in Latvia, focusing on intellectual property, and information and communication technology matters, as well as data protection.
I also lead the Technology, Media and Telecommunications sector group, which provides various types of legal assistance to clients in this sector.
Intellectual property. I assist clients with our team in various trademark, domain name, patent, design and copyright matters. For example, we develop and implement strategies for intellectual property protection, register trademarks, represent clients in patent and other forms of intellectual property litigation; and draft and negotiate contracts related to the creation, transfer and licensing of intellectual property, such as franchise agreements, IT system and software development agreements, etc.
Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, IT, communication, and other technologies. A large proportion of the clients I work with either provide electronic communications, programming or technology-related services, or the use of such technologies is essential to their business.
Personal data protection. In 2018, I helped Sorainen clients implement the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation. Currently, I lead a strong and knowledgeable team that assists our clients with various personal data protection issues, including ensuring compliance and preparing the necessary documentation, as well as in communication with supervisory authorities.
Varied experience. I joined Sorainen in 2012. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in assisting Sorainen clients with the preparation and negotiation of various types of contracts and ensuring compliance in regulated fields such as consumer protection, advertising, media, pharmaceuticals, gambling, food and alcoholic beverage distribution, distribution of nutritional supplements, and distribution of goods of strategic importance, among others. I have also assisted clients in competition law matters, as well as providing assistance in civil and criminal proceedings.
Academic work. Remaining engaged in academic work after graduation has given me the chance to meet many bright upcoming lawyers. I am involved, either as a coach or a judge, in moot courts held on a wide array of different topics, such as public international law, international arbitration, investment law, constitutional and administrative law, civil law and intellectual property law. I also teach the public international law course at the University of Latvia.
