He studied law at the University of Bonn, specialising in European and international law, and at the University of Oxford (Magister Juris). During his legal training, Carsten Bormann worked in, among others, the business division of the German Federal Ministry of Defence and the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Before transferring to Oppenhoff, he was a desk officer at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, working in the Public Security division, and a lawyer in the regulatory practice group atHengeler Mueller.
