Nicole Niessen

Work Department

Administrative Law, Family Law, Practice Group Education (Maastricht Office).

Position

Being a good listener: as a lawyer, Nicole is a big advocate for that. It helps to clarify the issue. Because it’s only when the issue is crystal clear that she can work, with input from clients and colleagues, to find the right solution.

Nicole tackles complex issues with a sharp mind and legal agility. She specialises in education law and is an experienced advisor and litigator in this field. Nicole is the first point of contact for the Education sector, within which she and her team assist clients with the power of joint effort and diversity of characters. She is also involved in the Administrative Law expert group.

Nicole works for educational institutions ranging from primary schools to universities. Youth care and childcare are also part of her remit. She is a member of the Dutch Education Law Association, where she jointly heads up the Governance and Management Working Group. She is also secretary of the Limburg SWOL University Fund and a member of the City Commission Giving Back Eindhoven and other organisations.

Nicole studied Dutch Law at Maastricht University and obtained a doctorate of law from Leiden University. From 2001 to 2007, she was a lecturer in Constitutional and Administrative Law at Maastricht University. She has several education law publications to her credit, including the preliminary opinion “Juridische uitdagingen voor krimpbestendig onderwijs” [“Legal challenges to shrinkage-proof education”] and several articles in the journal School en Wet. At Boels Zanders, she is a partner.
