Mutual insurance clubs that are part of IGP&I unite shipowners (operators, charterers) and jointly provide marine liability insurance (protection and indemnification) for 90% of the world’s ocean going tonnage.
Founded in 1899, IGP&I includes mutual insurance associations from the United States, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Japan and Luxembourg: The American Club, Britannia, Gard, Japan P&I Club, NorthStandard, The London P&I Club, The Shipowners’ Club, Skuld, Steamship Mutual, The Swedish Club, West of England P&I Club. IGP&I is headquartered in London, Great Britain.
Each P&I Club is an independent, not-for-profit mutual insurance association providing insurance to its shipowner and charterer members against third party liability in connection with the use and operation of vessels. The clubs cover a wide range of liabilities, including marine casualties, loss of life and bodily injury to crew, passengers and other persons on board, loss and damage to cargo, as well as pollution with oil and other hazardous substances.
