Career

I am Senior Associate and the personal and individual immigration lead in the Employment and Immigration team at HCR Law.

I have over 15 years’ experience in both personal and business immigration law. Prior to HCR Law I worked and trained at a top tier immigration specialist Band 1 immigration firm for 8 years and an international Top 50 UK law firm for 7 years.

I advise on the full range of UK immigration, asylum and nationality law with specialism in (complex) family-based and private life cases;  Settlement; EUSS; same-sex couples; international adoption and surrogacy, as well as economic & business routes for individuals seeking to work and/or set up business in the UK, including Global Talent and other categories.

I am an experienced advisor to corporations including Start-ups, charities, SMEs and larger (FTSE100) companies helping them obtain Sponsor Licences and advising businesses more widely in respect of their sponsorship matters and non-settled workforce and Post-Brexit options.

I am a trainer for  the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association (ILPA), delivering courses to lawyers and immigration practitioners on the Financial Requirements for family-based applications and on Private Life and Settlement applications.

I previously chaired the socioeconomic committee under my previous firm's DEI umbrella group.

I am a speaker and legal volunteer for the immigration human rights organisation, Rainbow Migration.

I was awarded Highly Commended in Law Society supported Law Works Pro-Bono Awards: Most Effective Pro-Bono Partnership 2022.

I am the author of various articles both in house but also externally, see: https://www.hcrlaw.com/news-and-insights/looking-beyond-sponsorship-alternative-routes-under-the-immigration-rules/ ; https://indd.adobe.com/view/bb853aee-9a09-4d84-b959-90286dd05d98 https://www.lexology.com/1092770/author/Adam_Cotterill/

"My experience of [the firm] has only been a positive one, mainly due to the exceptional service provided to me by Adam Cotterill. Adam has a fantastic attention to detail and deals with issues in a structured and calm manner. I would say that this is exactly what is needed in a lawyer – to feel that you are in good hands and that everything is under control. Adam has always been responsive to my communication and has always ensured that I am informed as to any progress. Adam clearly knows his subject matter in great detail and I would recommend him to any prospective clients without hesitation."

"Adam Cotterill was exceptional in all of our interactions. He was both professional and also kind and understanding to our situation. His expertise in this area made a great impact to our case, as he was able to clearly see the paths forward, able to look around corners and foresee any possible challenges and provide solutions to those before we got there. His ability to predict the information or challenge we might experience helped us be completely a prepared."
