Position

Professor Emeritus of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, School of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Founder and Managing Partner at “GIANNIDISKOURELEAS Law Firm”, which specializes in criminal law. Prof. Giannidis is practicing law in Greece continuously since 1986.  He is an expert in criminal law with great advisory skills and a well-regarded litigator with a wide experience. In the last 3 decades he is providing legal services to key Greek financial institutions and corporations, as well as several foreign banks and companies operating in Greece. He was lead counsel in most major financial criminal cases in Greece during the past 30 years. He has personally handled cases of complex nature demanding deep knowledge of criminal law (usually with European and international aspects) and delicate approach. He heads a well-organized team of lawyers providing services at a high level.

Career

Prof. Giannidis has a distinguished academic career. In the years 1983-1984 he was a lecturer (Akademischer Rat) in Criminal Law and Legal Philosophy at the Faculty of Law, University of Munich. Since 1985 he was teaching criminal law and criminal procedure at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Law School). He is now Professor Emeritus.

Prof. Giannidis serves as legal counselor to the National Bank of Greece (NBG) since 1993. Since 2014, he is Head legal counselor to the executive members of NBG and member of the Legal Council of the Hellenic Bank Association (HBA).  For 10 years (2004-2014) he was member of the Board of NBG. From 2015 to November 2019, he was a member of the Committee assigned by the Ministry of Justice with the amendment of the Greek Code of Criminal Procedure. The work of the Committee introduced a radical reform of the Greek Criminal Procedure.

Education

Prof. Giannidis holds a degree in law from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1973) and a PhD in criminal law and legal philosophy from the University of Munich, Germany (1977).
