Career

Tarek Badawy is a partner with Meysan and the Managing Partner of our Cairo Office. He specializes in international disputes, regulatory and government affairs and represents clients in trade, competition, commercial, media, and investment disputes before international tribunals and commissions, as well as Egyptian courts and administrative authorities. He also sits as an arbitrator under various institutional rules (e.g., ICC, DIAC, CRCICA) and in ad hoc proceedings, and regularly serves as an expert witness before courts and international tribunals.

Tarek also represents some of the leading players in the TMT sector and has acted as counsel for sports associations and marketing agencies before the COMESA Competition Commission in all investigations involving the sponsorship and broadcasting of sports events within the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. Leading legal directories consistently rank him as a leading practitioner of arbitration, TMT, and blockchain.

Tarek's work highlights include successfully defending the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in a precedent-setting investigation before the COMESA Competition Appeals Board; and in an ICC Emergency Arbitration under Swiss law concerning the alleged unlawful termination of a one-billion-dollar sports broadcasting and marketing contract. He also acted for a European sports marketing company before the COMESA Competition Commission with respect to its alleged breach of COMESA Competition Regulations following its execution of a multi-million-dollar sports broadcasting contract with a European-based international sports association.

Additionally, Tarek represented media and pharmaceutical companies before the Egyptian Competition Authority in the context of investigations for breaches of the civil and penal provisions of the Egyptian Competition Act.

Acted for National Petroleum Limited, commonly known as Petronas, in a regulatory filing before the Egyptian Competition Authority.

Represented a global investment firm focused on private equity, infrastructure, real estate asset management, and energy, in a regulatory filing before the Egyptian Competition Authority .

His work highlights also include acting for Eni S.p.A. in a regulatory filing before the Egyptian Competition Authority concerning the global acquisition of Neptune Energy Group Limited. He also represented an oil and gas company in regulatory filings related to the acquisition of a renewable energy company. Tarek advised various pharmaceutical and cement companies in investigations by the Egyptian Competition Authority and provided counsel to international shipping and pharmaceutical companies on issues of abuse of dominant position and cartel provisions under Egyptian competition law. Additionally, he acted for a spirits producer in relation to competition-related regulatory filings and licensing matters in Egypt.
