Career

Flip Petillion is a leading domestic and international dispute resolution lawyer known as a court litigator and as counsel in arbitrations. He also regularly acts as arbitrator.

Flip has been handling court litigations and arbitrations for nearly 30 years. Matters were related to the following industries: Intellectual Property, Information Technology, Media & Entertainment, Internet, Fashion, Art, Postal, Telecom, Energy, Construction & Real Estate, Automotive, Aviation and Aerospace.

Flip built an outstanding reputation through his special focus on intellectual property rights, the Internet and the liberalisation of markets.

He represents multinationals and first-class individual portfolio holders.

Litigation

Flip appears in Belgian courts and before the European Court of Justice and the European General Court. Clients frequently invite Flip to take on disputes with a view to representation in appeal proceedings. Flip regularly manages cross-border disputes involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, technology transfers, etc. 

Arbitration

Flip acts as counsel and also serves as chairman, sole arbitrator and party-appointed arbitrator in arbitration proceedings in different international forums such as ICC, ICDR, CEPANI, LCIA, WIPO, FORUM, CAC. Many of his appointments are directly related to his expertise in the field of intellectual property rights, information technology, media and communication, construction, energy, and distribution. Flip also regularly acts as a secretary in international arbitrations. 

He started his bar experience when he was assistant professor in international and comparative law at the Institute for Public Law and International Relations of Leuven University, chaired by Professor Hans baron van Houtte.

He frequently speaks at international Arbitration and Mediation seminars. 

Other activities

Flip is a member of the Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC) of ICANN. He represents IP owners as GNSO Councilor of ICANN (2018-2020), where he acts as an MP for Internet policy development.

Since 2016, Flip lectures at the IP and ICT Masters Program at Leuven University. Since 2019, Flip also is a teacher at the new EUIPO Trade Mark and Design Education Programme. Flip also lectures at the training programme organised by Beneluxstichting Beroepsopleiding Merken en Modellengemachtigden (BBMM), a foundation that is supervised by the Benelux Association of Trademark and Design Law (BMM). He is a frequent speaker at professional and academic conferences and has published several books and articles.

Early 2019, Flip issued his new book on the enforcement of IP rights in the EU Member States. Flip involved 27 firms and near to 80 peers in this project. In 2017 he edited a book on the enforcement of IP rights in Belgium. He involved 25 peers in this project. Also in 2017, he published a book on the competition for the control of the Internet, including an analysis and plea for judicial review through arbitration.

Flip has consistently been recommended in peer review guides, including Chambers Europe and the Legal 500 EMEA for Dispute Resolution, Arbitration, IP, TMT Media, and Entertainment.
