Derk van Geel has been a lawyer for over 17 years and is fully specialised in assisting companies in financial difficulties. This often involves making a rescue attempt for the company, including restructuring debts. If that fails, it involves properly preparing for bankruptcy, possibly with a view to a relaunch. Derk supervises this entire process. Since Derk also acts as trustee in bankruptcy, he knows exactly how this process proceeds and is ideally placed to help his clients prevent or resolve problems. Think of conflicts with creditors, the receiver or with the bank, which may involve liability, issues about collateral or credit cancellation.

Derk also has extensive knowledge of and experience in debt restructuring through WHOA and amicable debt restructuring. He enjoys and works well with financial advisers in such a multidisciplinary process, both in the role of attorney and Restructuring expert, and is very well versed in figures. Derk lectures on WHOA to accountants, lawyers and judges, among others. He is a co-member of the AllesoverWHOA foundation, an independent foundation dedicated to sharing knowledge on WHOA and amicable restructuring.

Derk is a PhD student at Leiden University, where he researches the psychological aspects of restructuring and bankruptcy, in particular the operation of ‘trust and distrust’.
