Career

Leveraging his experience abroad and his fluency in four languages, Rafael Ribeiro has significant experience conducting international internal investigations and representing clients in cross-border disputes.

As Latin American countries continue to crack down on corruption and implement more robust anti-bribery legislation to target wrongdoers, Rafael has been at the forefront of this movement as part of the team that conducted two of the region's most high-profile anti-corruption investigations on behalf of energy sector clients. These investigations involved novel issues regarding the interplay between local anti-corruption legislation and the FCPA, privilege, data privacy, interactions with regulators from multiple jurisdictions, and parallel civil disputes in several countries.

In those investigations, and in on-going confidential internal investigations in the region involving energy, telecommunications, and life science clients, Rafael has leveraged his fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, and French to assist clients in navigating these issues. Rafael understands cultural nuances and is able to communicate effectively with witnesses, which are indispensable assets in a successful internal investigation. In 2019, Latin Lawyer included Rafael in its "250 List" and noted that he was a "key" part of the Hogan Lovells "growing reputation in the Latin American anti-corruption space, with its positioning on the ground of the region allowing it to combine a U.S. and/or UK law perspective with local knowledge." Rafael also understands his clients’ needs and has been called a "business lawyer" who has a "good way of seeing the business picture and empathizing with the client and the case." Rafael is regularly invited to speak and write on issues relating to compliance, internal investigations, and international dispute resolution.
