Position

Virginia heads the firm’s charities team and plays an active role in the education sector group. She advises charities, universities and schools, and a wide range of not-for-profit organisations, on core legal, regulatory and governance issues. Her specialisms include charity governance, fundraising, trustee training, charity mergers, charity registrations and incorporations, commercial arrangements, and serious incident reporting.

Her clients range from charities of all sizes to community interest companies, universities and Oxbridge colleges. She works closely with the firm’s private client and business services teams, particularly on real estate, employment and corporate matters.

Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP has a firm-wide charities practice in which the Cambridge office plays a key role. Practice head Hilary Aldred, who handles employment, education and charity law matters, is ‘an outstanding lawyer and tactician‘.  Aldred, commercial and IP partner Rachel Bradley and managing associate Sophie Whitbread are the core of a team that handles contentious matters before the Charity Commission, as well as administrative and governance advice, trustee issues, data protection guidance and more. These clients include local and national charities, and social housing and trade associations. It also advises religious institutions, family offices, philanthropists, and grant making charities. Oxford-based Richardson advises charities on many employment matters. Cambridge-based Aldred advises numerous charity and not-for-profit clients with particular expertise in advising charities in the education sector. Laura Dadswell is another key contact who acts for many wealthy families when they are creating philanthropic structures. Virginia Henley joined the firm in September 2024.
