Immigration Barrister
Career
As an Immigration Barrister at Richmond Chambers, Alex advises, prepares applications and represents clients in appeals and judicial review proceedings in relation to all matters of UK immigration & nationality law, with an emphasis on human rights cases.
In particular, Alex is regularly instructed in human rights challenges involving children, adult dependant relatives and medical or suitability issues. He also specialises in deportation appeals and deception cases, from deprivation of citizenship appeals, to judicial review claims against revocation of ILR and tax-related suitability issues. Alex further advises and assists with complex British nationality matters, such as historic Commonwealth cases requiring family status tracing, or cases involving adoption or surrogacy.
Alex’s practice involves representing clients at immigration appeals before the Immigration and Asylum Chambers of the First-tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal, against Home Office decisions. He has advocated on behalf of individuals and families in numerous human rights appeals, asylum appeals with trafficking elements, appeals relating to European nationals and their family members, deprivation of citizenship and deportation appeals and has often worked with vulnerable appellants and witnesses. Alex assists clients directly with immigration appeals at any stage of the process, including submission and preparation of the appeal as well as representation at the hearing. Alex also accepts solicitor's instructions to represent lay clients at hearings.
Similarly, Alex has experience in judicial review proceedings involving complex public law challenges where there is no right of appeal, from the pre-action protocol stage, to drafting detailed grounds and representing clients at judicial review hearings.
Alex authors articles and opinions on a variety of matters relating to UK immigration and nationality law. His case notes have been published in ILPA (the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association) Monthly and the Journal of Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law.
Alex has been involved in immigration law since before qualifying as a barrister, having undertaken pro bono work in the field whilst completing the Bar Professional Training Course. Following that, Alex obtained a position at a top legal aid immigration law firm and quickly became accredited as a Senior (Level 2) Caseworker under the Law Society’s Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme. Within that role, Alex represented individuals in their dealings with the Home Office, as well as during proceedings before the First-tier and Upper Tribunal. He specialised in assisting individuals in immigration detention with matters of bail, asylum, deportation, trafficking, human rights and particularly with bringing public law challenges by way of Judicial Review.
