Position

Maria specialises in public international law and international dispute settlement, including international arbitration. She has considerable experience of investment treaty arbitration, human-rights related dispute settlement and national litigation related to sovereign disputes, such as post-award proceedings related to investment awards and sovereign immunity from jurisdiction and execution. She also advices corporate entities on ESG-related issues and human rights due diligence. She accepts arbitrator appointments in investment and commercial arbitration and is listed by the EU as suitable for arbitral appointments in bilateral trade disputes. Recent notable mandates include acting for foreign investors enforcing an award against the Republic of Kazakhstan; multiple set-aside proceedings before the Swedish courts acting for Ukraine, for Kyrgyz Republic, against Georgia, and against Montenegro; and confidential mandates relating to State immunity and restructuring of international investments.

Career

Before joining the partnership at Westerberg & Partners, Maria practiced with noted public international law boutique Volterra Fietta in London. She holds a doctorate degree in public international law from Uppsala university, and also has experience from the Swedish court system and the International Criminal Court. She frequently speaks and publishes on topics of public international law, international arbitration, international sanctions and corporate human rights responsibilites.

Languages

Maria is native in Swedish, fully proficient in English, and has good knowledge of French.

Memberships

Maria serves on the boards of Swedish Women in Arbitration Network (SWAN) and the European Federation of Investment Law and Arbitration (EFILA). She participates in several committees of ICC Sweden, on topics related to international trade and investments, and contractual terms relating to sustainability. She is also a member of the International Law Association and the Swedish Arbitration Association.
