Career

Arthur Choy advises on corporate and intellectual property matters, including mergers and acquisitions, cross-border transactions, and licensing.  Arthur’s diverse work background provides a rare combination of extensive legal and hands-on business experience in both Korea and in the U.S.

Arthur began his law career at Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Underberg, Manley, Myerson & Casey in 1987, where he worked on a variety of corporate cases, including a multi-million dollar litigation matter in which he played the critical role in convincing the court to void the contract at issue.  In 1988, Arthur joined Cookson America, Inc., as the sole attorney attached to the office of the Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, to assist in negotiating and executing the company’s numerous mergers and acquisitions transactions.  Also at Cookson, Arthur managed and coordinated litigation matters concerning lawsuits involving subsidiary companies, and gained early exposure to technology transfer issues when undertaking negotiations for a license from Brown University on behalf of a company subsidiary.

In 1991, Arthur returned to Korea to join the senior management of Korean Microsystems, Inc., where he was instrumental in reviving a struggling semiconductor business suffering from declining sales and protracted labor and management issues.  After Arthur’s promotion to CEO in 1996, he stabilized labor relations and reached an agreement with the union to disband, a first in the labor stronghold of Incheon, where the company was located.  On the business side, Arthur implemented a technology transfer strategy by working closely with a number of Asian and North American technology companies that transformed the business into a specialty semiconductor packaging and testing company for power integrated circuits and transistors.

In 2014, Arthur joined as Managing Director Partners K&K, Ltd., a boutique firm specializing in investing in companies experiencing financial, management, or family succession dislocations.  He led the legal team in the formation of a separately-managed fund in Hong Kong which focused on investing in US life sciences companies.

Since 2011, Arthur has been an adjunct professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).  He lectures in the graduate school’s Master of Intellectual Property program, where he teaches licensing and US intellectual property litigation to legal professionals, including judges, attorneys and in-house counsel.

Arthur received his B.A. in East Asian Studies from Columbia University in 1983.  He graduated cum laude and was awarded the Taraknas Das Prize in Oriental Humanities.  Arthur received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1987.  He currently sits on the board of It’s Hanbul, a publicly-held cosmetics company in Korea.  Arthur is a member of the Connecticut Bar.
