Director and Costs Lawyer

Career

John began his career in legal costs in 1995 when he joined the specialist insurance team of a long-established firm of costs lawyers that provides services covering the whole spectrum of issues relating to costs litigation. In this capacity he specialised in commercial and insurance litigation, catastrophic injury and medical malpractice claims, solicitor and client disputes and private client matters.

In his extensive career John has acted for both claimants and defendants dealing with negligence disputes and high value injury claims. He is an experienced advocate who has acted for clients at detailed assessments, appeals and CCMCs at the UKSC, RCJ, SCCO, various district registries and at commercial arbitrations.

In recent years John has also advised on the costs of significant litigation that has been widely reported, due to the novelty of the matters involved in the claim. In 2024, John has assisted clients dealing with high value and complex costs disputes, including a claim for costs of £4.8m which involved international elements, Solicitor’s Act litigation with preliminary issues associated with novel points of law and several costs management disputes in which the damages approached £10 million. Other claims involved international aspects with teams in different jurisdictions and proceedings issued in England, the ADGM and the BVI.
