Career

I am a senior restructuring and insolvency lawyer with considerable and wide ranging experience, acquired both as a lawyer in private practice and as a partner in a boutique investment firm.

I qualified as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand and regularly appeared in the New Zealand District Courts and High Court, usually acting for financial institutions. I moved to the UK in 1999 and first worked as a policy advisor for the Department of Trade and Industry, where I worked on proposals to make major changes to the UK’s insolvency regime, which resulted in the Enterprise Act 2002.

In 2001 I returned to private practice, joining the restructuring and insolvency team in the City office of a large national firm, where I advised investors, directors and insolvency practitioners on numerous corporate insolvencies and restructurings as well as working on a few interesting bankruptcy cases.

In 2011, I co-founded a private equity firm focussing on investing in and turning around distressed and underperforming businesses. I worked on several complex financial and legal restructurings, often utilising insolvency law processes in order to optimise the capital structure. I also acted as in-house counsel and as a director for our investee companies, gaining considerable “front line” of experience dealing with the legal and commercial issues faced by small and medium sized businesses and their directors.

I hold Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce Degrees from the University of Auckland and an MBA (with Distinction) from Bayes Business School.
