Managing Partner. Lawyer graduated from the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the University of the Republic (UDELAR), later graduated as a Master in Business Law at the University of Montevideo (UM). He is a former Aspiring Associate Professor of Commercial Law at the Law School of the University of the Republic (UDELAR).

His position intertwines the management of the firm, with the development and execution of its strategy, and the monitoring and personalized attention of clients and their affairs.

In his more than 20 years of experience at the firm, Santiago has advised clients from various fields of activity on mainly corporate matters (corporate law, mergers & acquisitions, antitrust, commercial contracts, complex negotiations).

Corporate compliance is a core focus for Castellan Abogados, which advises clients on the implementation of internal policies, often on a multi-jurisdictional basis. International companies make up a significant proportion of the group’s client roster, spanning the real estate and construction, infrastructure, agribusiness, retail and automotive industries. The team has a successful track record advising on the incorporation of subsidiaries in the country and mergers by absorption. Share transfers, share purchase agreements and shareholder disputes are also areas of expertise. Practice head Santiago Castellán brings a strong background in M&A to the team. Maria Lucia Acosta leads the dedicated corporate compliance practice, spearheading the firm’s due diligence work and playing a key role in subsequent M&A. At the associate level, Mariana Fagioli joined the team in June 2023, bringing to the team corporate governance expertise and advising both local and foreign companies. María Paula Uhalde García left the firm in January 2024.

Uruguay > Dispute resolution

Castellan Abogados provides representation in civil and commercial disputes and civil liability and damages cases to a diverse clientele of national and international corporations, individuals and families. The team also noted a recent increase in cases requiring alternative dispute resolution. Following her promotion to partner in August 2023, Maria Lucia Acosta rose to head of the practice, bringing particular expertise in multi-jurisdictional disputes and experience in judicial proceedings for the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards and interim measures in arbitration. Santiago Castellán plays an active role in the team, representing both companies and creditors in financial restructurings and insolvency proceedings. Senior associate Carolina Diaz de Armas joined the team in August 2023, strengthening its cross-border capabilities and advising on international contractual matters.
