Position

Shaw provides pragmatic and commercial advice to technology companies on the end-to-end launch and delivery of products to market.

Having worked with smaller companies in private practice as well as in-house in large corporates, Shaw advises on all areas of legal, regulatory and compliance. He has also helped take start-up businesses to scale and international expansion.

With experience across all areas of commercial and consumer law, and spending several years as lead in-house counsel for a technology business supporting all areas of its strategy and day to day operations, Shaw has special expertise in consumer protection, customer segmentation and migrations, consumer credit, product liability, data protection and GDPR, cyber security, intellectual property, marketing and advertising and brand protection.

Career

Shaw qualified at Osborne Clarke and then worked at Thomas Eggar (now part of Irwin Mitchell) for eight years, initially as an M&A lawyer, and then the Commercial team.

In 2012 Shaw joined Centrica, supporting the residential energy business with their smart meter rollout and new energy initiatives before becoming lead counsel for Hive, Centrica’s Internet of Things business, helping take it from a start-up to an award-winning growth business with over 1.5 million customers worldwide. After this he moved back to the energy business as Associate General Counsel and part of the management team of British Gas Energy, tasked with developing a new agile and competitive energy business and migrating a 7 million customer base onto a new billing platform.

Personal

As a husband and father, Shaw ensures he gives his two boys as much time as he can (whilst they still want it and before the XBox takes priority!) He is otherwise mostly in or on the water – swimming a couple of miles a week and getting out on his paddleboard when he can, but the rivers are getting busier since lockdown! Any spare time after that and outside of work is spent on his cars, Lego or a decent jigsaw puzzle….
