Career

Richard heads the firm’s practice. He is considered to be one of Israel’s premier IP litigators, and he leads the Luthi+Co. team in most major cases.

Richard studied law at the University of Southampton in England, where he was awarded the Winston Churchill prize for best academic performance. In 1986 he founded Luthi & Co., which under his leadership quickly grew to become one of Israel’s leading Intellectual Property firms.

Over the past 35 years, Richard has been lead counsel in countless Intellectual Property cases, including most of the major Intellectual Property cases litigated in Israel. He has played a major role in establishing Israel’s Intellectual Property jurisprudence.

Richard specializes in thinking outside the box, and under his leadership Luthi  & Co. have developed an international practice managing and advising multinational and domestic clients on international litigation. Richard has also advised and represented the research based pharmaceutical industry in discussions with the Government and at the Knesset (The Israeli Parliament).

Richard has a record of public service and has served as a member of several governmental committees established to update and amend Intellectual Property legislation. To teach the next generation of Intellectual Property Attorneys in Israel, Richard has served as adjunct Professor of Law at Haifa University 2010-2012, where he taught Patent Law, and during the years 2016-20202 he served as adjunct Professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem where he taught advanced Patent Law.

Together with partner Christopher Brice, Richard was invited to contribute the chapter on the “Protection of Inventions in Medicinal Chemistry” in the renowned textbook “The Practice of Medicinal Chemistry” (edited by C. Wermouth, 4th edition, 2015), which has garnered much praise from scientists and lawyers.
