Career

Edward graduated from Oxford, with a first class honours degree in jurisprudence. He joined MFB in 1992, having worked for the previous eight years in Hong Kong. 

Ed works principally with shipyards,  ship owners and operators on both contentious and non-contentious matters. He has also acted in a number of professional negligence matters.He has handled cases in arbitration and in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the House of Lords, and through to the European Court of Justice (The West Tankers or FRONT COMOR case).

On the non-contentious side, Ed has bought and sold companies and businesses, set up agencies and joint ventures, and acted in ship sale and purchase transactions.

Ed is a Supporting Member of the LMAA. He has acted as arbitrator, and is on the IGP&I panel of arbitrators. He was the BMLA delegate to the CMI working group on recognition of judicial ship sales.

Ed was recommended by Legal 500 in 2013 as a Leading Shipping Lawyer who 'always responds to the needs of the client'. He is also described as a key member of the team, singled out by peers as a "formidable adversary" in Chambers UK 2014. He is regularly named as a leading shipping lawyer in both Chambers and the Legal 500, and was listed in The Legal 500’s inaugural Hall of Fame in 2018. In Chambers 2018 Directory, where Ed was listed as a Notable Practitioner, he is noted in particular for his advice on contentious and non-contentious matters and his involvement in dry shipping matters, such as shipbuilding disputes and ship sales and purchases.
