Career

Trained with a specialist construction law firm, Shadbolt & Co, qualifying as a Solicitor of England and Wales in 2002.

Subsequently worked for international law firms in London, Berryman’s Lace Mawer and Olswang LLP in the Construction departments.

In the UAE, the last 10 years have been spent working for established local law firms.

UAE experience includes:

  • DIAC, DIFC LCIA and LCIA proceedings for both claimant and defendant.
  • DIAC Arbitration – acting for a Main Contractor against the Developer. Issues included prolongation; alleged defects; wrongful deduction of liquidated damages.
  • DIAC Arbitration – acting for Main Contractor against the Developer of a ‘super-tall’ residential tower in Dubai Marina in a FIDIC contract claim for AED 100m underpayment; issues included prolongation; alleged defects; wrongful deduction of liquidated damages. The hearing in late 2020 was one of the first hybrid hearings.
  • Dubai Court 2019 – Acting with local team for the Main Contractor claimant against the developer and certifying engineer (Delay, defects, liquidated damages, non-payment, failure to certify completion, precautionary attachment on bond).
  • Arbitration – Acting for a Master Dubai Developer as defendant and counterclaimant in two arbitrations brought by another Master Developer. Acting for a firm of Quantity Surveyors.
  • DIAC arbitration claim AED 350M – Acting for a Master Developer. The claim was withdrawn following the Response.
  • Advising the main subcontractor on a large hotel project in its claim against the main contractor for termination, underpayment, call on the performance bond and liability to its subcontractor.
  • Advising a subcontractor in relation to a claim on a landmark building project in Dubai.
  • Acting for a global built asset consultancy on circa 20 disputes as claimant. Acting forDeveloper in claim against a certifying Consultant.
  • ICC Arbitration – Acting for the UAE half of an international JV in a dispute with its Greekpartner in relation to a Free Zone cement factory project.
  • Advising a master developer in relation to a potential arbitration claim for AED 390M.
  • Acting for MEP engineers in relation to various claims.
