Career

He specialises in insolvency law and debt recovery and is dual-qualified as an Insolvency Practitioner having successfully taken the Joint Insolvency Examination Board exams in 2014. He also gained the Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency in 2013. James also gained Higher Rights of Audience in 2021 and is therefore able to conduct hearing in the higher courts.

James has significant experience of advising insolvency practitioners, creditors, distressed companies and company directors with contentious and technical insolvency matters. His expertise includes bankruptcy and winding-up proceedings, debt recovery, asset sales, landlord and tenant insolvency issues, defending director disqualification proceedings and pursuing and defending company directors in relation to claims brought on behalf of insolvency practitioners for matters such as preferences, transactions at an undervalue, misfeasance and wrongful and fraudulent trading.

James is also a member of the firm’s leisure sector team and had an in-depth understating of how the sector operates, which he has put to use when advising a wide range of leisure businesses. He has advises single0site operators, chains and breweries on issues surrounding insolvency, debt recovery (including complex free trad loan scenarios) and more general commercial disputes.

Education

James completed his training contract at Harrison Drury in 2012, after studying Politics and Russian at the University of Leeds. He then went on to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course, both with Distinctions, at the University of Central Lancashire.
