Career

Shirley specialises in shipping, international trade and insurance, and has been practising in mainland China for over a decade.

Her clients include many domestic and international ship owners, operators, charterers, traders, local shipyards, P&I clubs and insurers. She is dual-qualified in England & Wales and the PRC (non practising).

Shirley advises on various aspects of shipping, including charterparties, carriage of goods by sea, collision, pollution, shipbuilding and ship sale and purchase. Her work ranges from drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, to advising and representing clients in arbitration and litigation. Shirley is also experienced in marine insurance and regularly advises on issues under policies or subrogated claims against third parties.

Her expertise extends to contentious and non-contentious international trade matters. She regularly assists Chinese shipowners, managers and insurers on the impact of sanctions, appropriate sanctions policies and procedures, including drafting/advising on sanctions clauses.

Shirley has extensive experience in handling international arbitrations (both institutional and ad hoc) in Hong Kong, Singapore and London, mainly relating to charterparty and shipbuilding disputes. She has successfully assisted clients in having their foreign arbitration awards recognised and enforced in China.

Shirley also handles cruise ship projects in China, advising on various operation and management agreements for international cruise ship brands.
