Career

Yi Mei is a Partner in our Firm. She graduated from the Singapore Management University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Laws and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2013. 

Yi Mei specialises in dispute resolution, which includes arbitration, litigation and mediation. She has appeared and assisted in various interlocutory application, trials and appeals, in the Court of Appeal, High Court and State Court. 

Apart from dispute resolution, her areas of practice also include corporate and commercial matters, corporate advisory, and estate-planning matters, such as wills, probate and appointment of deputies under the Mental Capacity Act and has been invited to give talks at public libraries on Wills and Estate Planning matters. 

Experience & Notable Work 

Civil Litigation  

Yi Mei had assisted in acting successfully for a construction company seeking to defend an application to set aside an adjudication determination in Sito Construction Pte Ltd (trading as Afone International) v PBT Engineering Pte Ltd [2019] SGHC 7. Even on appeal, the Court of Appeal had agreed with the decision in the Court below.  

She had also acted for a main contractor company in applying for a stay of execution proceedings in FT Plumbing Construction Pte Ltd v Authentic Builder Pte Ltd and another matter [2018] SGHCR 3.  

Yi Mei has also represented parties in contested probate applications, including a case where the novel issue of whether a creditor of an estate had the right to lodge a caveat in Khor Liang Ing Grace (executor of the estate of Tan See Wee, deceased) v Nie Jianmin [2014] 4 SLR 1197.  

Adjudication Proceedings  

She is also familiar with proceedings under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act (Cap. 30B), and has represented various companies as in both the adjudication proceedings, as well as the subsequent enforcement proceedings in Court. 

Criminal Litigation  

Yi Mei had acted for and assisted in various criminal litigation matters, ranging from Penal Code offences to regulatory offences.  

She assisted in a High Court Trial followed by an appeal to Court of Appeal for an offender charged with an offence of culpable homicide – Public Prosecutor v P Mageswaran [2017] SGHC 307, on appeal in Public Prosecutor v P Mageswaran [2019] SGCA. 

In Public Prosecutor v Praveen s/o Krishnan [2017] SGDC 190 and on appeal in Praveen s/o Krishnan v Public Prosecutor [2017] SGHC 324, Yi Mei had successfully obtained probation for a young offender who had been convicted of drug trafficking. 

She has also successfully obtained an acquittal of an accused charged with 2 counts of drug trafficking inPublic Prosecutor v Mohamed Amir Khan s/o Banakhani Shafi Khan [2017] SGDC 196. 

In Public Prosecutor v Luo Jianguo and Zhou Haiming [2016] SGDC 126, on appeal in Zhou Haiming v Public Prosecutor and other appeals [2017] SGHC, Yi Mei acted for an offender involved in the first case in Singapore involving theft of casino chips amounting to over S$100,000. 

Pro Bono Work 

Yi Mei is also a firm believer of the importance of pro bono work, and had previously spent a year at the Law Society of Singapore’s Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS) as a CLAS Fellow, and still remains an active volunteer with CLAS, representing individuals who do not have the means to afford their own lawyer.

Law-Related Activities and Committees 

As an active member of the Law Society, Yi Mei also serves on the Law Society’s Criminal Practice Committee and Criminal Legal Aid Scheme Committee.
