Sophie Wang

Position
I am a Senior Associate in Bird & Bird’s employment team, based in Shanghai.
I have over 10 years of experience handling the full range of employment matters. This includes advising on the establishment and implementation of company policies, recruitment and dismissal, redundancies, compensation and benefits, labour dispatch, cross-border employment and secondment, global mobility and immigration, negotiation of employment contracts and separation agreements, compliance investigations, employee transfer in M&As and restructurings, as well as employment due diligence projects.
I have advised a large number of international companies across a range of industry sectors, including manufacturing, technology, automotive, optical, furniture, medical device, financial services, entertainment, retail and wholesale, and hospitality, on various employment cases.
Prior to joining Bird & Bird, I worked in the employment team of another international law firm for seven years and before that I had been working as the in-house legal counsel for a Global 500 MNC. The combination of professional experience as an external lawyer and in-house counsel allows me to better understand clients’ legal needs, providing practical legal solutions and advice which add value to their businesses.
Lawyer Rankings
Hong Kong > Labour and employment
Fielding specialist employment lawyers focusing upon employment aspects of major spinoffs and employee transfer issues, the Bird & Bird practice routinely represents domestic and international corporations from across the life science and tech spaces. On the contentious side, the group has expertise in defending Labour Tribunal proceedings, often relating to contractual severance payments and sexual harassment claims. The team’s head Diana Purdy has vast knowledge on all elements of discrimination cases, restrictive covenants, and employment litigation, whilst Nathalie Sit and Sophie Wang stand out for their contentious and non-contentious employment work.
China > Labour and employment: foreign firms
Spearheaded by the ‘excellent’ Diana Purdy, who shows an ‘in-depth knowledge’ of employment law affairs, the Bird & Bird team has vast expertise in handling discrimination, inequality, and sexual harassment claims. Purdy operates out of Hong Kong, while Shanghai-based Sophie Wang primarily focuses on negotiating employment contracts and separation agreements. Natalie Sit is also highlighted as key for her knowledge on unlawful dismissals, alongside breaches of restrictive covenants.
