Career
Alex brings more than 15 years of experience in data protection, information security and technology commercial matters acquired during his time working for big and small technology companies and law firms in the United Kingdom and Australia. Alex is practising English law and, as a certified privacy professional, he offers consultancy in relation to global data protection regimes including Australian privacy.
Alex specialises in data privacy, information and cyber security, commercial law, digital platforms, online harms and contentious privacy matters. As a passionate GDPR-native data privacy lawyer, he is a keen observer and legal commentator on developments in privacy law and modern technologies around the world, and a big fan of the Australian data protection reform.
Alex’s experience includes:
Advising on behavioural data analytics in the financial sector. Advising on the rollout of AI-powered advertising conversion tracking technology. Assisting with user complaints in relation to privacy intrusive social media features. Preparing action plans, drafting responses and risk assessments in the context of cyber incidents spanning across multiple jurisdictions. Drafting global privacy notices. Drafting and negotiating data sharing terms and bespoke data licensing terms. Advising Australian tech businesses on their mandatory data processing agreements for corporate customers in the United Kingdom and Europe. Designing international data transfer frameworks. Resisting claims for compensation for privacy breaches. Advising on the risks of WhatsApp for corporate communications. Streamlining the process for handling data access and other rights requests. Preparing an opinion on children’s privacy requirements for a popular app. Mitigating risks of monitoring in the workplace due to automated information security measures. Advising on privacy risks in relation to private research about persons of interest and social listening. Managing vendor contract negotiation, compliance due diligence and risk mitigation in relation to the deployment of facial recognition for user authentication.Alex is admitted as a lawyer in England and Wales and a non-practising member of the Law Society of Ireland. He is currently taking steps to becoming admitted as a lawyer in Australia. He holds IAPP’s Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) certifications CIPP/A, CIPP/E and CIPP/US in relation to privacy laws in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), Europe/UK and the United States of America.
