Career

Jason Lai is a Partner in Munhoe, Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice. He has extensive experience in the areas of civil, commercial and corporate litigation.

Jason was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2005. Prior to joining Munhoe as a Partner in 2014, he practised law in Shearn Delamore & Co for eight years and thereafter continued his practice in Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill.

Jason has conducted cases on a wide range of claims and disputes, including contractual, commercial and corporate disputes, shareholders’ disputes, land disputes, tenancy disputes, debt recoveries, fraudulent transactions, breach of fiduciary duties, negligence and other tortious claims, defamation suits and others. He has acted in complex and highly contentious disputes, as well as cases that are less complicated. His clients include domestic, international and multinational companies, government linked companies, public listed companies, private companies, small and medium enterprises, professional firms and individual litigants. Given his diverse background, he has the experience and expertise to cater to the personal requirements and objectives of each distinct client.

Jason has acted as counsel in all tiers of the court, including the Federal Court (the highest court in Malaysia), the Court of Appeal and the High Court.

Jason has extensive experience in compulsory acquisition cases under the Land Acquisition Act, having acted as counsel in: (i) enquiries before the Land Administrator; (ii) land reference proceedings in the High Court; (iii) judicial review applications in the High Court for an order of certiorari to quash an acquisition; and (iv) appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. He recently appeared in the Federal Court and succeeded on a novel issue pertaining to the interest that a claimant is required to establish to obtain compensation under the Land Acquisition Act. The Federal Court case was reported in several publications.                                                                              

Jason obtained his LL.B (Hons) from the University of London with a 2nd Class Upper Division classification in 2003. Jason subsequently obtained his Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) in 2004 and was the recipient of the Best Student (Overall) award and the Best Student (Individual Subject) award for Evidence and Criminal Procedure.
