Position

Matthew leads our EU and competition team where he advises on both behavioural competition law and UK and multi-jurisdictional merger control. His behavioural work includes advising national and multi-national companies and trade bodies on compliance issues as well as extensively advising on sales and distribution strategies. He and the team have defended numerous clients in investigations and dawn raids by the CMA and the European Commission, as well as making leniency and immunity applications (including appeals to the Competition Appeal Tribunal).

He also advises clients on developing and implementing tailored competition compliance programmes, including running training and workshop sessions for employees and putting in place internet based training modules. Examples include implementing compliance programmes for national retailers, automotive manufacturers and numerous national trade bodies/associations.

Career

Matthew trained at Eversheds LLP in Birmingham (1996-98) and remained with Eversheds as a qualified solicitor until 2009 when he moved to Browne Jacobson as a partner. His training included working in the firm’s Brussels office. Matthew qualified into the commercial department at Eversheds in 1998 as a competition law specialist. He was appointed as an associate in 2003 and as a senior associate in 2007.
