Career
Matthew is and Intellectual Property attorney and advises his clients on advertising and marketing, consumer finance, financial privacy, and e-commerce matters. His diverse clientele spans the entertainment, television, and consumer products sectors, including fashion and consumer electronics.
Matthew handles a broad spectrum of intellectual property issues, such as trademark, copyright, right of publicity, counterfeiting, and domain name disputes. He frequently assists clients with the selection, clearance, registration, and enforcement of trademarks both domestically and internationally. In this capacity, Matthew manages the clearance, prosecution, enforcement, and licensing of WarnerBros. Discovery's global trademark portfolio, the largest non-fiction media and entertainment company worldwide.
His advertising and marketing practice encompasses all facets of advertising and marketing law. This includes representing clients before the NAD and NARB, drafting contest and sweepstakes rules, reviewing advertisements, and advising on unfair and deceptive trade practices, as well as issues related to FTC regulations and guidelines, along with state and other regulatory laws.
Matthew's entertainment practice focuses on the selection, adoption, and utilization of trademarks, along with domestic and international trademark prosecution, enforcement, and portfolio management. He has supported clients in brand development, protection, and enforcement across more than 100 countries.
Matthew has been involved in numerous high-profile projects for entertainment clients, and currently oversees international intellectual licensing for the consumer products and branded entertainment and adventure division of a major entertainment company.
He has also led successful enforcement actions for clients, such as the seizure and destruction of over 25,000 items from a former licensee.
Matthew is responsible for conducting trademark clearance and advising on branding for a large consumer electronics and appliances manufacturer. His role with this client has expanded to include reviewing advertisements across all print and online media, including television and radio. He also has expertise in internet advertising areas such as banner, mobile, and keyword advertising, ensuring compliance with FTC regulations and guidelines, as well as state and other regulatory laws.
Matthew provides counsel on a wide range of issues related to developments and compliance with Internet and e-commerce laws, including payment systems and consumer financial regulatory compliance. He advises clients on laws and regulations concerning credit cards, debit cards, stored value cards, and electronic payments and transfers.
Matthew regularly assists clients in ensuring compliance with financial privacy, privacy, and data security laws and regulations. He also works with clients on drafting and implementing privacy policies to ensure adherence to international, federal, and state regulatory laws and guidelines.

Matthew is an aspiring gourmet chef and baker, gardener, and a supporter of the University of Tennessee football and basketball teams. When not at work he also enjoys spending time with his family and visits to his family’s farm in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
