Career

Gustavo is a senior partner of Pinheiro Guimarães who splits his practice between Bankruptcy & Restructuring and Litigation groups. Gustavo has an impressive track record that includes the largest and most complex litigation cases in Brazil. As an Attorney for the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo has developed over the years a specialized practice in Administrative Law, applying his knowledge across the firm in most of the transactions that involve constitutional, administrative and regulatory matters. Gustavo also has been praised by the firm's clients as a strategist due to his multi-disciplinary knowledge of Brazilian law and his capacity to handle complex litigation and arbitration cases. Gustavo's sharp legal skills – including his knowledge on Bankruptcy Law – coupled with his outstanding ability to negotiate, enables him to actively lead, on the creditors' side, negotiations of restructuring plans and out-of-court debt restructuring transactions. Due to his solid litigation and bankruptcy background, Gustavo is a key resource when it comes to structuring of collateral packages in transactions in both distressed and non-distressed scenarios. This adds value to the firm's credit and corporate practice in general, since this enhances the firm's ability to structure deals and flag risks based on what has been effectively tested in Brazilian courts. Gustavo has solid academic credentials, having graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and also been admitted as State Attorney of Rio the Janeiro (1999-2002) and, later, as Attorney for the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro (since 2002), having now almost 20 years of Administrative.
